Format

Paper 3 is a calculator-allowed, practical- and analysis-focused exam designed specifically for HL students. It includes data-based questions, experimental design tasks, and extended-response problems that require students to apply advanced chemical understanding. Questions often involve interpreting unfamiliar datasets, analyzing procedures, evaluating experimental reliability, and proposing improvements.

Content

This paper assesses the HL-only components of the IB Chemistry syllabus in greater depth, covering areas such as advanced bonding and structure, energetics and thermodynamics, reaction mechanisms and kinetics, spectroscopy and analytical techniques, transition metal chemistry, extended equilibrium and acid–base theory, and complex redox systems. Students are expected to integrate conceptual understanding with strong analytical skills, applying their knowledge to experimental scenarios and demonstrating clear scientific reasoning throughout their responses.

Students must show structured working, clear reasoning, and proper chemical explanations.

  • Assesses a deeper understanding of all major areas of the IB Chemistry syllabus, including stoichiometry, atomic structure and periodicity, bonding and structure, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox processes, and organic chemistry, with additional HL-only extensions for Higher Level students. The questions require students to interpret data, analyze graphs, apply chemical reasoning, and connect theoretical concepts to real-world chemical situations.

Format

The IA is a scientific investigation where students design and carry out an experiment based on a research question of their choice. It is submitted as a formal written report, demonstrating experimental planning, data collection, analysis, evaluation, and application of chemical theory.

Content

The IA focuses on assessing a student’s ability to apply the scientific method, handle experimental data, and communicate findings clearly. Reports are typically 6–12 pages, with emphasis on methodological design, justified reasoning, quality of data, validity of conclusions, and reflection on errors and improvements.
