35% of HL Final Exam Grade

Time Allotted

  • Standard Level (SL): 1 hour 15 minutes

  • Higher Level (HL): 2 hours 15 minutes

Format

Paper 1 is a case-study-based examination.
The IB releases a pre-seen case study several months before the exam.
All questions in Paper 1 relate directly to this case study.

  • Section A (SL & HL): Short-answer and structured questions

  • Section B (SL & HL): One extended-response question

  • Section C (HL only): Additional extended-response question requiring deeper analysis

Students must apply business tools, decision-making frameworks, and evaluation techniques to the real-world scenario provided.

Content

  • The paper assesses a student’s ability to understand and apply concepts from across the syllabus, including business organization and environment, human resource management, finance and accounts, marketing, operations, and, at HL, deeper strategic analysis. Students are required to draw directly from the pre-seen case study to justify decisions, analyze data, interpret charts and numerical information, and evaluate the effectiveness of different business strategies within the given scenario.

Example Question - HRM

Paper 3
Only HL

25% of HL Final Exam Grade

Time Allotted

  • Higher Level (HL): 1 hour 45 minutes

Format

Paper 3 is based on a pre-released Statement of Inquiry (SOI) provided by the IB several months before the exam. In the exam, students answer questions that extend and apply this SOI to new situations. The paper includes structured, data-driven, and extended-response questions that assess strategic thinking, decision-making, and the ability to apply HL tools to complex business scenarios.

Content

This paper focuses on higher-level strategic analysis and the application of advanced business tools. Students must demonstrate deep understanding of business strategy, leadership, innovation, change management, international expansion, and strategic decision-making frameworks such as Porter’s models, Lewin’s Force Field Analysis, STEEPLE, Ansoff Matrix, and M&A evaluation. Answers must show strong analytical reasoning, use of quantitative data, and balanced evaluation connected to the SOI.

Is IB DP Business Management Difficult?

The difficulty of IB DP Business Management varies depending on a student’s analytical skills, writing ability, and consistency. Many students find the subject accessible because the concepts relate to real business situations, but the challenge lies in applying theory accurately, interpreting data, and writing strong evaluation. HL students must also handle deeper strategic analysis, quantitative tools, and the Paper 3 Statement of Inquiry, which adds complexity. With regular practice, clear understanding of business frameworks, and guided support, students can excel in both SL and HL and develop valuable skills for university programs in business, management, marketing, and finance.
